What does it take to Thrive?

What does it take to thrive?

I truly wish that there was a simple, easy answer to this question, especially for those of us who live with chronic pain. I know some of the essential ingredients;  information, knowledge, motivation, support, purpose. I also know that I had these ingredients for years, or at least I thought I did, and I didn’t feel like a thriver. I felt like a survivor.

Understanding pain and your own experience is important. Partly because it allows for the experience of perspective, choice, and empowerment. When you don’t understand what is happening, it is difficult to take effective actions on purpose. I know I stumbled around and found some effective actions but it took a lot of trial and error.

If you live with chronic pain–you probably are motivated to not be in pain! But that is not enough. It takes the kind of motivation that results in new ways of being, thinking and acting. Pain can be a great motivator but our natural reactions to pain tend to reinforce pain, suffering and the environment that causes more pain. As I have said before, it is not your fault that you experience pain.  It was not my fault that I experienced pain. But we can make choices about how we experience it that can lead to less pain and/or less suffering and more thriving.

  • Gain understanding through mindfulness and awareness

  • Become your own best advocate

  • Explore multiple ways to treat and manage pain

  • Understand the gifts of support

  • Reach out and accept support when offered and give when you can

  • Engage with life through creativity, community, passions, and purpose

  • Accept what is and celebrate what brings joy

This has not been easy for me nor is it easy for many of my clients. Partly because it is difficult to know what it takes and because it takes time to see the results. I thrive now and in sharing how with others, we thrive.
